The smooth clam is a relatively large mollusc that inhabits sandy or gravel sea beds. It can grow to 11 cm in length. Its outer side is smooth and usually brown in colour, though this may vary depending on the colours of the environment it is trying to imitate. Smooth clams feed by filtering nutrients from the water.
